Septage Disposal Regulations

Proper septage disposal is one of the most regulated aspects of running a septic service company.

Disposal options:

Wastewater treatment plants: Most common. Must have an agreement or permit with the facility. Tipping fees range from $30-$150+ per load.

Land application: Allowed in some states with proper permits. Must follow EPA 40 CFR Part 503 for pathogen and nutrient management.

Septage treatment facilities: Dedicated facilities in some regions that accept and process septage separately.

Documentation requirements:

Manifest or trip ticket for every load disposed

Customer name, address, and volume pumped

Disposal facility name and location

Date and time of disposal

Truck identification and driver name

Penalties for improper disposal can include fines of $1,000-$50,000+ per violation, license revocation, and criminal charges for illegal dumping.
